what's the deal with eurasians and baldness? Maybe one of the older members can give me a heads up on what to expect. I've noticed a very light thinning at the temples over the past 5 or 6 years, but nothing really interesting. My dad's got a full head of hair, but my mom's dad was somewhat balded...but actually in a cool way...so I'm not so worried if I do. And by the way, the thing about inheriting baldness from your mother's side isn't true. But it is a combination of both sides' history.

I used to have a full head o hair, but around the 30 mark a widow's peak of recession started, then a general thinning of the pate. But you're half viet, I'm half chinese. So who knows.

Male Pattern Baldness is an X-linked gene, right? meaning, one gets it from their mom. so if your mom's dad or mom's mom's dad had it (or your mom or mom's mom, i suppose) have baldness... you might be in for a treat.
I dunno if it has anything to do with being eurasian. Actually, my mom's dad had it, but I don't seem to... YET.

Im not 100% certain, but im pretty sure that its not merely an X-linked disorder, yes, one part of it may be X-linked, but it is almost certainly not the only gene involved in MPB. Studies have shown that the occurence of MPB in sons of fathers in whom it occurs have a higher chance of inheriting it. I think it can come from both parents, as the full genetics behind it is still unclear - hence no fool-proof antidote in the considerable future.
There would be no genetic predisposition to it by just being eurasian, although, there could be a higher occurence of MBP in certain races, especially in europeans, but then, statistics can be deceiving.
I think with anything, its just down to luck of the draw really, your mum/dad have the genes and the condition may occur in them, but this is never a 100% sign that it will be passed on, im sure there have been incidences of brothers, with one balding and the other not.

Why do only men go bald?

They don't, women also go bald, the same thing that happens in men occurs in women, but to a far lesser degee - usually associated with the thinning of hair than actual baldness.
But there are some women that go bald as well, just far more commen in men.
Could be related to higher amount of androgen in males - hormone used for the development of sexual characteristics in males (i think), but also found in females of course.

Maybe your hairline is just maturing and you wont lose much more hair than that.

My Father is going bald and I have resigned myself to the fact that I might one day be so. I think that a 100 worse things can happen to you!

If that doesn't work, try dihydrotestosterone.

I have heard that bald men are generally rich.... (I'm not bald, but if the above were true in any way, I would shave my head to try!)

Read it, interesting, thx/ Is there any truth to the incidence of cardiovascular disease and testicular cancer being higher in men that have male pattern balding? I have read some studied that suggest a link, but dont know how true this is!

^ Ahhh, the old correlation hot potato. Yes, I've read that, CV disease correlated with male pattern baldness. I've also read the contrary. Consensus points to mild correlation. Just watch your sources.....usually the strongest advocates come from someone pushing a drug claiming that if you cure your baldness, you'll heal your heart too . The testicular cancer is much murkier. This is my wife's bailiwick. She wasn't familiar with a strong link or studies of any scientific merit, but keep in mind....testicular cancer is a young man's game, right around the time that MPB would start showing up. Is it the hormonal link....or just timing/coincidence bias? Great questions.

The miracle drug ;D Yes, one off studies wouldnt really give an accurate picture - might not be the balding that is the only common factor, may be something else? I guess the only way we will know is if a mass epidemiological study is done looking at the correlation.

If I ever start to go bald (which I don't think I will since my maternal grandfather didn't), I'm gonna just buzz my hair off. I hate when balding guys try to comb over what hair they have to try to hide bald spots. It just makes it even more noticeabe imo.
