Who do you like and why? Crystal Kay sings in a variety of styles: R&B, hip-hop, sentimental ballads with orchestras, and rock. She is musically versatile. Amerie focuses mainly on Hip-Hop and R&B. Their fanbase is different. Amerie's fanbase is mainly African-Americans and other ethnicities in urban cities. Crystal Kay's fanbase is primarily Japanese and other Asians in Asia. Their presentation styles are very different. Amerie's is more Western/U.S. American it comes across as very hard and bold with an overt sexuality. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKDCNcV1p3I&mode=related&search= (Amerie in that video alludes to her Asianness/Koreaness when there is a closeup of her face, the Korean script in the wallpaper background and the teapot and sushi on the table. Then you see her dancing again with the other scantily clad dancers in the primeval jungle. Yet the props to her Koreaness and then the jungle dance just screams to me-EXOTIC! Especially in the context of the video. I'm not sure if she is choosing to market herself that way or the producers are.) Crystal Kay's presentation style is more flirty, girly, sweet and cute. Very kawaii. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rFiMDDI29o&mode=related&search= I like Crystal Kay better because she has a wide range styles, and seems to have a stronger musical background since her mom sings and her dad plays the bass guitar. Amerie can sing but her range is limited.

I kinda like Amerie a bit better. Maybe it's the presentation of her videos. Plus, I just find her to be more "sexier".
I get a little uncomfortable when Crystal Kay tries to reach high notes at the beginning....maybe it's just the song....But props to her for singing in a different language.

Hmm this is hard. I'd say Crystal Kay, in the end, because there is an element of ready-made-star commercialism that I really don't liike with Amerie. I agree with thea's opinion that it's screaming exotic and even though Crystal's performance is less interesting I'm keeping in mind that it's live and also for a completely different culture/audience which might not appeal to my western mindset/tastes...

Here's another video of Crystal Kay with a bit more sex appeal, yet still tasteful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGntQ349oFsIts interesting to note that her hair is relaxed (straightened) while her backup dancers all have curls. She's got the whole Japanese/Asian theme going on without being as objectified as in Amerie's "Touch" video. Here's an Amerie video for comparison: "Take Control" in which she is some kind of femme fatale spy chick. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGntQ349oFsSo her first popular video was "Touch" (as in touch me), the next popular video is "Take Control" (as in take control of me), what interesting Freudian themes are running through her videos. ;D Its interesting to see that in her videos she constantly seen carressing herself-neck, face, hair, abdomen etc. It looks rather seductive, come hitherish and alluring that guys must get turned on by it. Well, sex does sell! ;D Last video "One Thing" with rap artist Eve. It has a cool dance rythmn, and she looks sexy as hell but its not memorable for its lyrics.("It's just one thing you did." she sings. What is the one thing (he) did? What are those 2 alluding to hmmmm?) ;D www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZFnycSDxtI&mode=related&search=Ok, here's some examples of Crstal Kay's versatility: Singing with Hitomi Yaida "Darlin, Darlin" an upbeat rock song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT5EKpzucJc&mode=related&search=Some R&B /hip-hop styling: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT5EKpzucJc&mode=related&search="Kiss" A sentimental ballad with an orchestra. Very feminine without the "in your face" quality. The lyrics are very sweet as well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT5EKpzucJc&mode=related&search=Some pop singing "I Know" www.youtube.com/watch?v=ActoFtT1CcQ&mode=related&search="Telepathy" www.youtube.com/watch?v=n51jI4-zTMk&mode=related&search="Tears Live" www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJmlvBV8SaM&mode=related&search=A bit of light Hip-Hop dance music. "Candy" www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoSR7yoluTY&NRI don't see Crystal Kay as objectified in her performances as Amerie. I have to admit that Amerie does come across as a fully grown woman, whereas Crystal Kay seems more like a teen even though she's probably the same age as Amerie. Crystal Kay is not limited to just Hip-Hip and R&B whereas it seems that Amerie is primarily seen as just Hip-Hop and a bit of R&B. If she had decided to pursue the rock genre would she have been as easily marketed? (There are a few black folks in the rock genre and folk genre-Hootie and the Blowfish, India Ali, etc.) The fact that she is part Korean/Asian seems to add to her marketability-oooh, "exotic siren" yummm..... ;D Anyhow, they both have their fans so to each his own.

Thanks for those links thea. Crystal Kay for the win. I just think Amerie is too sexual. I don't really like people who use too much of their sexuality to sell.

Crystal Kay has held a longer shelf life on my spinlists.
From the live perspective, in my perspective
Amerie comes off with more confidence and sounds a bit more produced, but it also sounds a bit generic.
C.K. ... there's just a little more vulnerability, it sounds more 'real', like she's into it so much she's singing alone in a room, it can be intimate ... there's noteable inflection in voice, emotion.
Though sometimes it translates to coming off skillfully lacking, it's just rough and its like listening to someone that has talent but the training just isn't quite there.
