Michael Jackson is still a legend, regardless of how much of a freakazoid he is. ^Definitely. It's a bit disappointing personal lives can get in the way of what celebrities are famous for (singing, acting etc), but then again, it doesn't surprise me as it's expected when stars live their lives in the limelight. Michael Jackson is an undoubted musical legend - the voice, the song-writing, the production, the videos, the live act - the whole package. The only artist to be inducted into the songwriter's hall of fame, twice! Looking at this thread, I'm not sure if people are responding with who they think are the greatest singers, the greatest all-round artists, whether these people are of an all-time or of a modern-day era, or if they are simply people's personal favourites. For all time, I would put Marvin Gaye & Stevie Wonder up there, both as vocalists and as writers. Even in arranging their music they have done brilliant work. Not to mention their influence, which will be infinite in my opinion. What adds to their legendary influences is the fact that they made the music that they wanted to themselves, not what the executives of Motown wanted, despite having a lot of the work they created being discouraged due to not being appealing enough to the commercial/mainstream market, in their views. Consider this in the world of today's music industry, which I would say is so much more heavily driven by marketing. I would also say Alicia Keys is one of the greatest all-round female artists in history, even if that is based on just two studio albums. I'm not aware of a female artist that has been able to have the critical and commercial success that she has had in the past, say 25 years, as an artist of the 'entire package'. Her live performances are unquestionably brilliant, her vocals are executed so well, as a song-writer i think she is fantastic (listen to the structure of 'if i ain't got you'), and she arranges her albums with the piano in such a conceptual manner. Amazing!

Farinelli I thought I heard ages ago a rare record recording of him and it was amazing or it could have been someone else, not sure. I also always thought David Gahan from Depeche Mode had a amazing voice to.

Maynard is quite good indeed. In addition to this, and from a purely rock/metal perspective, honourable mentions go to the following: Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom) - although I've never been a huge fan of any of his projects (enjoy a few songs here and there), this man has arguably the most versatile voice in rock/metal. Everything from death metal grunts, black metal screams, falsettos, robot voices, Sintra-esque crooning, rapping and funk. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) - the original and still the best traditional heavy metal vocalist going around. Many have followed in his footsteps and imitated him, but all have failed miserably. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) - again, not a fan of his band's music, but the man can go from extreme to serene in a split second. His range is quite amazing. John Bush (Armored Saint, ex-Anthrax) - initially slated to be Metallica's vocalist and was invited to join them between the release of their first two albums. His work with Armored Saint and Anthrax makes one wonder how Metallica might have turned out had James Hetfield focused solely on rhythm guitar duties for Metallica and not remained the band's vocalist as well.

And I will add Ben Gibbard (DCfC) and Jenny Lewis. Postal Service is GOLD. I know Baus isn't around anymore, but it's weird - I'd agree that the Postal Service IS GOLD, but I don't think their brilliance is in Ben Gibbard's voice. Not at all. It's the wonderful, thoughtful lyrics and combining them with electronic music that makes it creative and kickass. Ben Gibbard's voice is actually a bit weak and sappy in my opinion, but it works great within the rest of the collaboration.
