Highly subjective to begin, but also need to specify for which musical genre.

Highly subjective to begin, but also need to specify for which musical genre. Just because it's highly subjective does not mean we can't discuss it, right? I mean there are tons of other highly subjective threads in this board. This thread says "singers" (plural) leaving room for subjectivity and a variety of genres.

ooh,i like Lea Salonga, but i probably wouldn't have thought of her on my own.some of my favorites, based purely on the sound of their voices and vocal abilities, not ecessarily technical perfection: Jewel Maria Callas Sarah McLachlan Josh Groban Charlotte Church Alicia Keys Lauryn Hill Patsy Cline Radney Foster (though i think i'm influenced by his songwriting) Faith Hill Roy Rogers Brody Dalle,Joan Osborne and Janis Joplin-the whisky voice John Legend Mary J

^ Love: Paul Brandt Jo Dee Messina The Rankin Family George Strait Dwight Yoakam Shania Twain Jimmy Buffet Kenny Rogers Rod Stewart ('country comforts' is both instant relaxer and instant ache) Vienna Teng Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston Anita Baker Connie Francis (talented multilinguist) David Haas (christian singer) Diana Ross Chitra Singh (one of the older indian artists, beautiful) Sade (oddly like Coltrane and his work, took me awhile to appreciate some songs) Sinead O'Connor so many more, this is all I have off the top of my head but I know I'm not doing justice to the other 95%. Some I admire, others I like, some for the lyrical content, some for the melody and others because they're close to perfect for me in singer/songwriter ability. Maria Callas Alicia Keys Lauryn Hill Mary J Love those too. Not sure if you've heard Cecilia Bartoli (italian, newer generation) and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (german, older generation). I think you may like them if you like Maria Callas.

My favourite singer ever in the whole world would have to be Chris Cornell. That dude is hotstuff. Been in 3 bands (Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave), also writes solo albums, and wrote and sung the latest James Bond themesong (You Know My Name). IMO he has a great vocal range.
My other favourite singers would be... Amy Winehouse Lauryn Hill (me too Lacrimosa) Doug Robb (of couse as I'm a hoobastank fan) Ray Charles and plenty of lesser-known artists

My favourite singer ever in the whole world would have to be Chris Cornell. i love his voice, but he's going to burn it out any day now the way he sings. Yay! I'm not the only one who likes country. ^ i think one or two other people might also. Thanks for the recommendations,Cel. i like a lot of the artists people are mentioning, but i don't think they're anything special as singers.

i like a lot of the artists people are mentioning, but i don't think they're anything special as singers. Me neither - as far as technicality goes. But isn't the beauty of this thread/question its range of interpretations? As I said, I love them all in their "greatness" for different reasons. Oh yes, and also Wayne Newton. I think he performed in Vegas recently.
