^Question still remains as to whether this backwards compatibility applies to the 40gb PS3, though?
It seems as though the 40gb model is a little more bare-bones than its predecesors.

the new 40 gig model certainly is bare bones marketed for cheapness. As far as I know that model is not backwards compatible. also it only allows 2 players instead of a possible 4 with the usb hubs. If you want to buy a ps3 or 360 save up for them and dont substitute cheap prices for lesser models with hardware taken out of them to save production costs in my opinion.

Thanks for all the responses, they've been helpful I have actually decided that the strongest selling point for me, besides the reputed dodginess of the xbox hardware is that the xbox is almost a PC in a console box meaning I could get most of what I could get on the xbox on PC anyway. BUT, I don't think in Australia we have the option of anything besides the dressed down 40gb version now. Any of the 60gb versions left are most likely sold out. They've done us over royally on this issue I think. I don't want a barebones system that I'm still paying $700 for. As for the mention of Mario, it doesn't interest me. The wii is no more powerful than the gamecube anyway. Not noticably anyhow. It is taking game developers away from the state of the art hardware and focussing development resource on yesterdays gaming technology. I think that's what it come down to. So there will be a fancy wand from which to control Mario.... well take a look at the trailer for Killzone 2 and tell me Mario is more worth looking forward to! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBGMFLhbvvwHa, I sound like I know what I'm talking about when I really, average over the year probably spend 30 minutes a week playing games. With uni over though, I've got more time than I know what to do with! At least until I finalise my career choice. Maybe I should forget this whole thing and spend the summer between the pub and my surfboard.

While it's true there are only two usb ports now, you can still do up to 7 wireless controllers. Of course if you need to charge more than 2 while you're playing you're screwed...

Yes, this 40gb PS3 just isn't appealing to me on any levels and I think it would just be a waste of money to fork out $700 (which is still alot of money) on some half-arsed piece of junk. So for no longer producing 60/80gb PS3s here, I have this to say to Sony Australia: As for the mention of Mario, it doesn't interest me. The wii is no more powerful than the gamecube anyway. Not noticably anyhow. It is taking game developers away from the state of the art hardware and focussing development resource on yesterdays gaming technology. I think that's what it come down to. So there will be a fancy wand from which to control Mario.... well take a look at the trailer for Killzone 2 and tell me Mario is more worth looking forward to! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBGMFLhbvvwThe Wii just hasn't generated any interest on my part since its release either. The graphics just look lame and I don't like this whole initiative on the part of Nintendo to somehow mold exercise and gaming into one wholesome, fulfilling activity by releasing all these video games that have you running around your living room acting like a complete twit. Call me old-fashioned or lazy, but I prefer to do my gaming whilst seated on my couch with the controller in my hand, rather than jumping up and down on some electronic floor mat or waving a glorified remote control at the screen. Maybe I should forget this whole thing and spend the summer between the pub and my surfboard. Hold on to the pub idea, but still buy a console and pick up the latest version of California Games (if one exists) because with the way consoles are nowadays, you can probably emulate the real surfing experience minus the sand, hassle of going to the beach and lugging about a surfboard

So we're in complete agreement!
Haha, I remember California games on my Amstrad 286 computer. As much as I ruled at that game, I was far more interested in Leisure suit Larry 1. Even though I was seven. I finished it before my dad haha
I think I might just wait around till they realise their withdrawal of the 60gb was stupid.

360 has the better crop of games for the time being. I have a 360 and am pretty happy with it - there is always a good game out there to buy, and plenty of great titles coming out for the holiday season.
However, PS3 will have MGS4 (in Q1 2008...), which is a killer app for me. I fully intend to buy a PS3 when MGS4 comes out.

Mario Galaxy will be game of the year, I just think it probably would have been worth waiting two weeks to see if you liked it. @yongfook - hate to be the bearer but, but MGS4 was delayed till Q2 or later. Get a 360!

Figuring that games like Metal gear solid, halo, doom, allot of fps games. Once you finish it, the chances of you playing it fully through again and again lessen. actually thinking about it, the best games I've ever experienced where I can "Squeeze the Lemon" so to speak, as in to play into every possibility and combination the game could offer have always been on PC.

Every adolescent male's favourite video game I dare say. Loved the quiz you have to take at the beginning in order to determine if you're over 18 to which there is no randomness to the questions. You simply take a wild stab in answering and then jot down the answers for future reference. I've had the oh-so-catchy theme song as the ring tone for my mobile phone for years. Every time my phone rings, one of the lads will almost inevitably give me a weird look and then say "I've heard that song before. Where's it from again?!"

haha! Quality! I'm afraid I'm going to have to live behind the acturus times and find that ringtone . I'm wearing New Order out on the ring tones at the moment They were developing a Larry 8, but without Al Lowe. Don't know what happened there. Just as well, Al Lowe was a necessity.

^Don't say I wasn't a pioneer in having random ringtones!
Video game ringtones for the win: I've had everything from Mortal Kombat theme, Street Fighter character themes and have been thrashing the hell out of the LSL theme for years now.
Larry 8 was supposed to be in space or something random like that, wasn't it? The last one I played was 7 where he's on the cruise ship.

As I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't get anyone to back me on Mario Galaxy I wanted to take the chance to pimp it a little bit here and hope that someone will at least say they're excited, here's a review, one of many perfect scores it's received. To quote: Sometimes a game of such high quality comes along and you’ve just got to hold your hands up and say well done. Super Mario Galaxy delivers blistering quality in every area, whether it’s level design, the soundtrack, boss fights, graphics or controls. It feels familiar but fresh thanks to the sheer amount of ideas and creativity put into each and every level. Like so many lesser games do, corners haven’t been cut by reusing ideas over and over or artificially extending the length of the game with collect-a-thons. Practically every level offers something different from the one before it and it’s a game that will surprise and delight more the deeper you explore. There's no such thing as a perfect game, but Super Mario Galaxy comes as close as you're ever likely to get. An essential experience for all gamers.Graphics:10.0 By far the best on the Wii. Colourful, surreal and imaginative - all running as smooth as silk. Sound: 9.5 Beautifully orchestrated music mixed with catchy tunes and a selection of old favourites. Gameplay: 10.0 Perfection. With faultless control, a feast of new ideas and jaw dropping level design there isn't a better 3D platformer is existence. Lifespan: 9.0 Only 60 stars are needed to see the end credits but it'll take far longer to get all 120. And who knows what lies beyond that.... Overall: 10.0 Super Mario Galaxy is without doubt the finest game Nintendo have produced this decade - endorsements don’t come much stronger than that.

I bought Mario Galaxy a few days ago. Haven't had much of a chance to play it yet, just done the first few stars. It's a nice enough game, and definitely one of the best on the Wii, but I guess I've kind of grown out of platformer games now. It's Mario, so of course it is classically playable, but I'm more excited about the coming crop of AAA 360 titles such as Assassin's Creed and COD4.
