Actually I owe fight club for introducing me.. they never get any radio play around here. That closing sequence was one of the more memorable parts of the movie for me, and that song had a lot to do with it.

Hiphop: Nas - Illmatic (1994) ^Widely regarded as the greatest hiphop album ever created. 40 minutes of pure New York hiphop at its finest. Note - If the only hiphop you enjoy is the party/club songs of today, you will most likely not enjoy this album, because of the vast difference in sound and writing. The lyrics are complex, there is a lot of vocal imagery, the structural writing was much ahead of its time, the production uses a lot of jazz and soul sampling incorporated into east coast drum lines and sounds, and the album has a similar feel/vibe throughout its entirety so it sounds like a thorough album as oposed to a bunch of songs thrown together. There are some very creative concepts used in songs here, and you really get a feel of what Nas is about. Explanation, not glorification, is key. Seriously, as a fan of genuine hiphop, this album will forever remain classic and timeless. (hopefully I haven't hyped it up too much) I had listened to Illmatic a handful of times in the past after getting similar opinions and recommendations from friends. I went back and listened to it one more time to give it another chance, unfortunately for me I have to admit that, while I enjoy it, it just doesn't move me in the way that a lot of other albums can. I'm just not a pure hip-hop guy it seems. I definitely like Nas' flow and I can see the poetry in his lyrics... I think the beats are just a bit too austere for my tastes; this may emphasize the vocals, but since I can't completely relate to the stories he's telling, I guess I just can't completely connect. I'll highlight a few rap/hip-hop albums that I take great pleasure in: Deltron 3030 - s/t. ATCQ - Midnight Marauders; my fave hip hop group, love. Binary Star - Masters of the Universe Jeru the Damaja -The Sun Rises in the East I'm definitely a fan of g-funk. That's just a taste. Admittedly, I'm no hip-hop/rap expert.

Long, that's fair enough. I got Illmatic when I was just getting into hiphop, and on my first listen I just didn't like it. It was the the audio production of the album that I wasn't a fan of. However, this was when my taste in the genre was admittedly quite immature, and so as the years passed and my taste within the genre continued to expand, I one day randomly listened to the album and I fell in love with it. It was then that I understood why people look at Illmatic in the fashion that they do. My favourite song on the album is 'memory lane', not just lyrically, but also with its production - the keyboard riff just mesmerises me. My point is, I do understand where you are coming from with regards to Illmatic.
If you want to try another classic album from Nas, try 'Stillmatic'. The production is more modern yet maintains the New York vibe, and is much easier to accept on first listen. Both Illmatic and Stillmatic (2001) are considered Nas' two best albums. Some of the concepts on the album are very creative, eg. 'rewind' is a crazy track - I have never heard anything like it before. Simply brilliant. Also, the song, 'one mic', is considered by many to be one of the greatest hiphop tracks ever recorded. I believe the album would be liked more by someone that isn't, as you say, "a hiphop purist".
As for the albums you listed, I haven't listened to all of them but I have listened to a few and know the artists mentioned. I must say that you do have a good taste in hiphop; it isn't just the generic commercial style that you enjoy, that many music listeners outside of the genre perceive the hiphop to be represented by (don't get me wrong, I enjoy party-type tracks depending on how I'm feeling, and Doggystyle is one of the greatest records ever made with this vibe).
The album, "Midnight Marauders", by ATCQ (A Tribe Called Quest) is one of my favourite albums and is also considered a hiphop classic. It's definitely nice to see a fellow fan Long. 'Award tour' is one of my favourite songs on the album. I also like the opening line to one of the verses on 'Electric relaxation', which goes something like this; "I like em brown, yellow, puerto rican and Haitian!", haha such a feel-good relaxing track, and a nice line about the physical appearance of women, ie he has a love for the looks of different ethnicities.

Fat Joe's early (1995) "Jealous Ones Still Envy" is easily one of the dopest hip hop albums. I'm also a fan of Freeway's "Philadelphia Freeway." Today I listen to these more in the gym than anywhere else. Also gotta mention Master Ace who has remained relatively obscure in the mainstream but is an underground NYC hip hop legend
Another relatively unknown in the world of hip-hop I recommend: Atmosphere's "God Loves Ugly" and "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having"
As for non-hip hop, Ive recently been digging on The Ponys "Celebration Castle" and Anti-Flag's "For Blood and Empire." The Ponys are radical.

Between the Buried and Me - Colors My favorite CD of '07 by far. Wikipedia: Colors is the fifth studio album by the band Between the Buried and Me, released on September 18, 2007. Described by the band as a combination of "adult contemporary progressive death metal", the album runs together as a 64-minute epic split up into 8 tracks.
