Hiphop:
Nas - Illmatic (1994)
^Widely regarded as the greatest hiphop album ever created. 40 minutes of pure New York hiphop at its finest.
Note - If the only hiphop you enjoy is the party/club songs of today, you will most likely not enjoy this album, because of the vast difference in sound and writing. The lyrics are complex, there is a lot of vocal imagery, the structural writing was much ahead of its time, the production uses a lot of jazz and soul sampling incorporated into east coast drum lines and sounds, and the album has a similar feel/vibe throughout its entirety so it sounds like a thorough album as oposed to a bunch of songs thrown together. There are some very creative concepts used in songs here, and you really get a feel of what Nas is about. Explanation, not glorification, is key.
Seriously, as a fan of genuine hiphop, this album will forever remain classic and timeless.
(hopefully I haven't hyped it up too much)

In Rainbows - Radiohead The Reminder - Feist Kala - M.I.A. anything by Elliott Smith and I second Elle's recommendation of all Interpol albums (although I don't like Antics as much as the others)

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. ;D Definitely some great albums there. Believe it or not there was only one album that I hadn't downloaded already at some point, Cat Power - 'You Are Free' though I have listened to 'The Greatest' and really enjoyed it. I'll have to go back and listen to them before I write too much commentary, but I know that I love a good number of the albums mentioned (good taste EA's!). I don't really mean for this thread to be all about making rec's to me, but I'm glad I got it jump started. The forum needs an album thread if we don't already have one, I'll probably rewrite the prompt when I get a chance.. Thanks again!.. I'll be back shortly for some recommendations for you friendly folk.

Ok, before I phone I'll recommend "Daggers Drawn" by Ginger Ale. But that's Indie so you probably won't find it (even on Amazon). Too bad.

Your analysis was correct sir. I did manage to find these four songs on their myspace. Pretty sexy stuff, I enjoyed it; particularly 'laid back' and 'heat wave'. The album is for sale on French Amazon (they're French apparently), but some people don't pay for music anymore...

I'll have to go back and listen to them before I write too much commentary, but I know that I love a good number of the albums mentioned (good taste EA's!). I got the greatest this year and to me it was a bit of a let down..in that it wasn't really the erratic strange eerie (and angry) chan marshall we have come to expect. i guess i'll have to listen to it again tho..it seemed more like easy listening music. She's kinda fascinating because she is one of the few instances where i bought the album because I went to see a gig based on outstanding reviews (not the other way around if htat makes sense). My appreaciation for the album was bolstered by seeing her (i thought it wasn't anythign special before that). I think with her, if you can, you absolutely must see her live. Her voice has an eerie 4th-5th dimension that isn't captured on records. She's also exremely interesting in that she's not a show woman at all. She's also an absolute alcoholic and we were lucky to catch the gig at all..apparently she has about a 50% drop out rate. apparently her covers record is exellent. she did a cover of cant get no satisfaction when i saw her and it was great. also sigur ros..though it would appear you have a handle on rock/indie stuff already. i like the album with ageais bjurn (SP??!) and the white album. and another one. I also saw them live and they are pretty amazing as well.

I would have just as happily listed that album as my first recommendation. Honestly, I love all their albums and would say each is really worth checking out for anyone with any interest in alternative rock. I love that song and it seems to be their most famous, but I certainly don't think it's their best.
