First of all, there are times to tuck, times not to tuck, and times where, I argue, the half-tuck is the only solution. The following is this particularly male dilemma:
When wearing the common polo shirt, often times untucked they are just far too long. (While this is an issue of concern for any man and his polo, it is especially a problem for those of us who have broad shoulders and must purchase a size wide enough to house everything at the expense of an even longer tail, lest you be so daring to go with a gayfit sort of supertight shirt that hugs each curve and ripple that carves up your deltoids, traps, lats, bis, tris, and pecs...but this is, or should be, generally out of the question since it is too hungry a look, too low rent a look, too lame, and really just a mancard violation). Those that are not too long, and not too baggy, or loose, are best worn untucked. However, those that are unfortunately excessive in dimension, just never look right tucked in. They look terribly geeky imo.
So....what to do? Too long to wear untucked; and a tucked polo is really only permissible if you are wearing one to work for some reason, or are stuck in a school uniform, which was my problem from the 1st thru 8th grades. Anyway, the half-tuck seemed then to be the proper solution. You probably know it, or have seen it, and you probably have an opinion one way or the other about it. Simply take the very front of your shirt and tuck it in--no wider than a width-and-a-half-or-two of your four tucking fingers should do (there should never be an entire front tucked in)--so that the belt buckle and a couple, 2, 3 inches on both sides are on display (I personally prefer a decidedly asymmetrical half-tuck that runs 2 or 3 or 4, maybe, inches off to my left, where the belt slides under the loop, with the right side slashing downward nearly clipping the right side of the buckle). Now sadly, from time to time I see rather flashy guys sporting the half-tuck. This I cannot condone. Most of these guys are trying to show of their fancy belt buckle, which is just lame ass, and they typically dress too nicely in every other aspect which makes their half-tuck look far too contrived, far too statement driven. I think the natural state of the half-tuck is to express the slacker inside you, but to not go so far as being a slob who has no fashion sense.
Anyway, thoughts, criticisms? Is the half-tuck a man card violation now, as we head into 2008? Et cetera, et cetera . . .
oh, I ask because someone in fact tried to give me a mancard violation for sporting a very well executed half-tuck of an Ashworth golf shirt two weekends ago at Turnberry, as I was redefining the game one swing at a time, and I don't think I deserved a mancard violation for said "infraction" so I bring it now before EAN since the situation wasn't resolved during the conversation that extended through the next 5 holes.
