I listen to a lot of Chinese opera (see: Li Hai-yan). Can't find any of her stuff online though, unfortunately.

I love this italian singer called NEK. He sings in both spanish and italian. My dad introduced me to this 70s french singer Christophe who is pretty cool. All these sad lovesongs. A japanese penpal turned me on to this pop-rock japanese group called SPITZ. Otherwise it's just what happens to come my way...

My sister recently sent me a bunch of cds in the mail (which was very exciting). Röyksopp's "Melody AM" was amongst them. I think I can thank her Norwegian boyfriend for this one as the group appears to be from Norway, but it's interesting stuff so far. I like some of the songs. Kind of electronic-y. Big hits in the UK a while ago, so I'm behind.
I'm also going through a Sigur Ros phase -- Icelandic + gibberish makes for good study music.

French pop music is very similar to US Pop Culture music, just without the English lyrics. But the basic beat elements, melodies, etc. are very similar in a lot of songs. Never really cared for it before living in the States, but "when in Rome, do as the Romans do." I've found that a lot of the music isn't bad at all. Catchy tunes, indecipherable plays on words, and the typical love/relationship, loneliness, anger, song about absolutely nothing stuff you find everywhere in the world.
A few notables:
Mylène Farmer - Older more popular songs, sort of like a cross between Madonna and Annie Lennox, a bit older, but some pretty catchy tunes. "Désenchantée" (Disenchanted), "Ainsi Soit-Je" (This I Am), etc.
Brice de Nice - Pop/Rap/Hip Hop kinda stuff. Goofy looking white French dude with big nose dancing around.
Ilona Mitrecey - Pop/Folk music, young girl with two Top 10 songs currently that feature animation cartoons (girl with big eyes and big head with little body, like Japanese animation) French girl dancing around with cartoon cows, birds, bees, and goats. "Un Monde Parfait" (A Perfect World) and some other song about vacationing in Italy. Kinda cute and catchy.
Nadyia - R&B Pop, a little more aggressive. She's pretty cute as well.
Gérald De Palmas - Mainstream pop music, not too lame/girly, a little folky. "Au Paradis" (To Paradise) and "Elle habite ici" (She Lives Here)

French rap, for me, is probably the worst. Richard, nice little list there. I don't listen to that much French music, there are some really good ones, namely older stuff like Serge Lama, Sardou & Charles Aznavour. However it's not exactly the kinda music I'll have pumping in the car stereo... From more recent ones, I like Calogero, specially "Si seulement je pouvait lui manquer" sad but very good song; Leslie's "Vivons pour demain" is good, she's super cute... ;D Michel Sardou & Garou's "La Rivière De Notre Enfance" hits the spot with the words. Emmanuel Moire's "Mon Essentielle" sounds nice, & Wallen's "L'Olivier" is really good. I dunno, not the biggest French pop fan, but these are the ones I've heard recently & like.
