Hold the chopsticks near the bottom instead of the top...much easier to manoeuvre then... I find the reverse is true, hold them at the top. Relax your hand, the less tension the better. A low grip causes the chopsticks to collide or slip out of place, it's trickier to pick up food. A high grip enables greater precision.

Practice, practice, practice. Or just ask for a knife and fork.

lol its so embarrassing at chinese restuarants cuz i have to ask for knife n fork don't be. fork and knife is more civilized ...I asked for a set just the other day. on another note, does anyone else have the problem where people assume you can't use em and it turns into a judgement thing? it pisses my sister off to no end. When I went to Malaysia last time I felt like my cousin was judging my brother and I on our chopstick ability.. But I didnt seem to mind cos he said I can use them better than my brother ;D But yeah, my chopstick proficiency is about average.. Sometimes I get lazy in Asian restaurants and ask for the fork and spoon.. I prefer it actually cos I can eat with em faster.. But i usually I get to practise with chopsticks at least once a week, and on the rare occasion I may stab my food with the chopsticks especially if it's slippery i.e. fish balls ;D

I practiced by trying to have a conversation with my chop sticks like a sock puppet. Living in the midwest, whenever I go to a Japanese steakhouse, no one can use chop sticks efficiently but me, and the chef usually dishes out all the extra food in my direction. In the land of crackers, the half-Asian is chop stick king.

I remember practicing with bowls of popcorn when I was a kid so I got pretty good - my dad had a Chinese business partner so I ate at his house and restaurant alot. But now, since I've been eating sushi so much over the years with these skinny, disposable wooden ones, I was unprepared for some thick and slippery, laquered ones the other night and felt like a total beginner - haha, laugh at the Gwai Loh!

I used them last night in this trendy "fusion" restaurant (Asian-European food). For some reason the waiter seemed impressed...aparently they were there for decoration. Here's the logo/ place mat of the restaurant, very curious. Great food

Those small round slippery mushrooms are proper little f***ers.
Chop sticks are my weapon of choice unless I'm eating toast or ice-cream.

Here's the logo/ place mat of the restaurant, very curious. Great food I thought fusion food was kinda crappy. It was like a bad cross in between two differnt ethnic food trying to please to all crowds. And I ate that in an expensive restaurant too! Ok, maybe I shouldn't be the judge, seeing as how I've only had 1 "fusion" meal. I much prefer knife and fork, though when eating Asian food, I can't help but to use chopsticks. Well, here in California, anyone knows how to use chopsticks, so it really isn't that big of a deal.

I hold them all wrong and barely ever use them because of that. I blame parents They never ever said anything about the way I held them until I happened to notice 10 years later that I was the only one who held them that way.

Yeah, I hold chopsticks wrong, too. But hey, whatever works, right? I only use them when I'm eating asian food, otherwise it's a fork and knife for me.
