Not quite DIY stuff, but my mum is getting a village house built at the moment.. i've been helping with the 'designing' of the interior, picking out tiles etc etc. its quite fun and pretty impressive seeing how it's changed from being a pile of rubble to a proper house. BUT, the builders are a bit shonky, the ensuite/master bedroom is somehow smaller than the second bedroom.. and just random things like that. Plus, the sizes are never what they are on paper.

I've been doing them for the last couple of years, and whilst it began as a hobby, it's now becoming a chore, mainly because it's what I do with most of my spare time. Once you start pulling things out, you really don't know what you're going to find, particularly with old houses. Most of it I'm doing myself, except for specialist trades like plumbing and electrical, and rendering. Things I've done so far include: - ripping out carpet and pulling out the old timber floor and installing new, including structural supports - relining walls to conceal rising damp - new skirtings and architraves - painting - new downlights - a completely new bathroom in a new location including walls - render and paint the front facade I'm pretty much fed up with it, so I'm going to finish off a couple of things and then get a builder in to do the rest. I still have to: - build new front fences and gates - knock down a rotten balcony and balustrade and rebuild it - tile the front verandah - knock down the back room, which has asbestos sheeting, and rebuild it. I think I'll get the builder to do that one.

We moved in a perfect house two years ago. Everything is slowly deteriorating.

If you want it done right and if it's a reasonably big job, my best advice is "Don't do it yourself". Hire sub-trades and be really involved in terms of overseeing the work, managing supplies, schedules etc. I learned this lesson after botching the paint job on my house a couple years back and mis-aligning some hardwood floor panels (which continually fluctuate in size).
If it's a basic installation tho, like carpet, lights moldings etc, then you should be fine. I would leave kitchens, bathrooms and any knock-downs to the pros. best of luck
