alot of Haruki Murakami books.. most re-reading Kafka on the Shore Sputnik Sweetheart etc etc I would seriously recommend this write he's absolutely a modern Franz Kafka I honestly don't get the hype about this guy. Everyone who comes to Japan flocks to the shelves to read this guy's work. I've tried reading him but honestly did not find him that engaging, at all. Perhaps I'm just missing something or it's not to my taste. But it really feels like he's just one of those authors who people feel they "have to" read, yet are completely overrated. Meh. same, picked up one of his books after seeing recommendations on here, but i cant get into it.. its still half read on my bed side table. just finished digital fortress, dan brown, so far behind the dan brown hype.. it was good, till the ending, which was a bit .. meh! my bf is going through a ''classics'' reading phase. so i'm starting to read them too.. to kill a mockingbird is on my holiday book list.

What was it about his work that you didn't find engaging?
I usually connnect really well with his characters and I like his plot lines. True, some have been pretty slow, but others have been brilliant. Which titles have you looked at?
The best: Kafka on the Shore, Sputnik Sweetheart, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.
The worst: Wild Sheep Chase, any of his short story anthologies (not all bad, just inconsistent).

The Wind Up Bird Chronicles has the awesome scene in the desert, but that aside, I think it took a long time to get 'into' the novel. And the way he structures the events in the story is really odd. I haven't read his other stuff, but if it's his style then I think I would be put off pretty quickly. He's just not very straightforward.

"Breaking Open the Head" by Daniel Pinchbeck -- a Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary shamanism. All about psychedelic drugs and their roles, myths, etc. in different places in the world today.
"The Goal" by Eliyahu M Goldratt - a surprisingly readable "business novel". A story about how a guy learned to understand the "Theory of Constraints", and apply it in his manufacturing plant. I'm enjoying it, actually. who knew?

Reading back issues of Wired and Computer Shopper. Though I'm glad I got Computer Shopper Free it's useless and I wouldn't spend a wooden nickel on a subscription. Reading "The Mystery Of Time," a National Geographic hardcover book and catching up on Chem and Economics DVD lectures. I would consider that a book as well though more passive. Also reading Salt***er fishing regs and Advanced Conversational Turkish.

I'm currently going through a phase of reading David Mitchell novels. I'm about half way through reading Ghostwritten and Number9Dream.
Awesome to see some Murakami fans though. Hard to find anyone I know here that actually know any of his novels.
