Homeward Bound, when they fall in the hole and have to leave Shadow behind because he's too weak to make it. I mean, it works itself out in the end, but s***, that was sad =(

Saw Return of the Jedi. Luke killed his own father. It was so sad, it would have been better if he joined Darth Vader to rule the galaxy together.
It was so terrible that a father and son fought. Ten when Luke dragged Darth to the shuttle but none of the storm troopers thought to intervene and save their boss from being abducted by rebel scum. Imagine the performance bonus if they popped a blaster bolt in Luke.

THE BICYCLE THIEF! Great f***ing movie. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I remember how it was amazing how well things came together, considering that they pretty much just gave the actors the general story structure and let them run with it. If I recall, both the scene with boy who almost drowns and the scene with the people in the church were both totally unplanned, and kind of just happened.

La Bella E Vita(or Life is Beautiful), when the father is killed and isn't there when the son reunites with the wife/mother.

Jaws 3. People can't accept him for the man-eating shark he is.

^Amelie was sad??? Or did you cry tears of joy. I thought it was a funny, witty, and eclectic movie.
I'll have to give my tearjerker award to Lilja 4-ever:

Definitely what gets me. I'm not sure I've ever been induced to cry during a movie when there wasn't music playing at the emotionally charged moment, but I've cried countless times when there it was playing. Braveheart comes to mind - something so sad about bagpipe music - as well as any movie about the holocaust (queue Itzhak Perlman violin solo).

i dont know. i think visually im too disconnected from whats going on in a movie to empathize that strongly. im just too aware that this is happening to other people.
but if theres something in the music it just cracks me. it appeals to some deeper part and combines with whats going on. thats the kind of stuff that hits me the hardest.
and yea. bagpipes are super sad sounding to me usually. i always picture these deep mournful cries sounding out from cliff sides over oceans and such.
