I am part jewish, part japanese, and part chinese. To simplify my heritage to people, I often just say that I'm "Asian" or "Half Asian." My brother accused me of playing what he calls the "Asian Card" to make myself sound more special than I am. Has anything like this every happened to you? How did you feel about it?

I usually say I am half chinese and try to leave it at that, but normally people ask whats the other half, so i can't get away with it completely.

i give them a disgusted look, and then emo-out...
or i just give them the list faster than they can understand. If you say "half-asian" or "insertaznrace/white," they always want to know specifics. All I know is asians never believe it when I say I'm asian, and the standard Americans always think I look asian. Just say you're Latino.

I'll use the Asian card to fill a quota. Like affirmative action quotas. Definately..would use the Asian box if it would get be a job or position that I really crave.
But otherwise socially and casually I don't look Asian and if I did say I am Asian. Most people would think," I'm Weird."

Sometimes, when I tell people I'm MIXED/ EA, they think I'm trying to make myself sound special... like I want to be different... like I SHOULD just be ONE RACE/ CULTURE from their perspective... b/c to them I look only chinese, filipino, hawaiin, spanish etc... *frustrated* now I'm hesistant to say anything...

I just say I'm black and it seems to confuse people enough that they stop a bit to contemplate at which point I make my daring escape...

There's no way for me to simplify without ignoring my other cultures. I usually ask people if they really want to know (after they ask) because I wouldn't want them to miss a meeting or important flight while I tell them the full story.

'Half Chinese' seems to be a satisfactory answer to those who ask.

Let them believe what they want to believe, you gave them a chance to actually understand. Though I think you have a right to get offensive if they start to tell you that you're wrong.

"Italian and Filipino"
I don't like to use the descriptive, 'half', as the simple-minded think I'm not as Italian or Filipino as some of my peers, purely because of my physical appearance.

I also never use the half term. So silly. I'm might try "Kazakh" for a while; see what kind of reaction I get. I want to try this too but havn't because I don't want to misreprisent kazakh people.
