I thought I would start a thread for anyone who is passionate about dance.
At the moment I dance as an interest: hip-hop,salsa, jazz and house (int/adv level). I've tried so many more styles over the years though as it fun to constantly try new things.
I noticed (katie?) from So you think you can dance (season 4) is eurasian..woo..hoo

I do Filipino folk dancing on a weekly basis and the odd latin dances (salsa, merengue, bachata) when at a club or wedding. I took Argentinian tango classes last winter/spring and absolutely adored it. There's a lot of opportunities to dance tango outdoors in the summer here, but now, short of paying $10 per milonga, I don't see where I'll get to keep up what I learnt. Actually when dancing in pairs, when I have a partner that doesn't have perfect rhythm I always feel like leading. Drives me nuts *lol* I swear my boyfriend is a better dancer than me lol. He has such a great understanding of how the human body moves, it all comes so easily to him. Hah, it was so funny. During our tango classes, we would switch partners so as to make sure we break habits and really get used to responding to someone else's body, as opposed to "cheating" and anticipating what your partner would do. All the other women in the course were pleasantly surprised with how my boyfriend led. I don't think they expected to be impressed by an Asian guy in a dance class.

This is my personal favourite type of dancing, as demonstrated in this live performance by R&B's king:

Hi,
Yeah kyu-ree merengue is pretty easy the beat of 1,2,1,2 is easy but gets boring rather quickly. Salsa rocks though, I used to dance it a few years ago and am now looking to start. The scene here in Sydney as all over the world esp among asians has exploded..more clubs, more teachers, more students. I want to find a partner though before i get back to it.
Emily, I tried Tango a few years back, I love watching it but I found the music just did not grab me like salsa music does. Don't give it up, it can take so much effort to get back into it. An idea might be to contact someone in the Argentine or South American community and find out when they have community events-that should be free or at least cheaper. Besides your boyfriend should paying regardless. Tell me about filipino folk dancing.

Salsa is actually quite easy to dance but like anything you want to be good at you have to learn technique and practise. You really have to be passionate about it. One thing that all girls agree on is that salsa makes them feel very feminine, something most girls don't really feel alot. kyu-ree, i know what you mean about patience and it is a virtue. Chances are any club/school you visit half the guys will know how to dance. Past experience has taught me to treat others as you want to be treated, i mean if you are patient others will be patient to you. I've dealt with impatient girls before and you never want to dance with them again..cause the positive vibe is not there. In fact when i was a beginner at salsa i danced with experienced females that were a bit arrogant and that motivated me to be a better dancer so i could throw it in their faces..but that was a while ago. Not many people in here in Sydney know what House dancing is. House is all footwork, in fact it has been around as long as hip hop,it is nothing new. I'd say house borrows heavily from tap dancing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CzfBZ1mYBswww.youtube.com/watch?v=_xLedJOclII&feature=relatedHouse is fun as you know but learning steps, spins and style makes house that much more fun. You can be more creative/expressive. I tend to like funky house though i can't stand anthem, techno or other raver music.

Same thing for bachata, it's "moodier" too, in terms of music. I can listen to tango music anywhere or while doing anything, really. Good idea about trying to get in touch with the Argentine community. Filipino folk dance is really varied. Here are some examples, by types: Rural: www.youtube.com/watch?v=T64cR8hsbYo&feature=relatedThe most popular Filipino dance, tinikling.
