Once I was having lunch with a friend of mine who happens to be a white male. When we went up to pay for our meal an elderly man approached him and said "you got one of them flip mail brides?" Not only racist to you directly, but racist toward Filipinos...

Actually subtle racism against Asians is completely socially acceptable.

I was shocked by how this guy could just come out and say such a thing to a complete stranger , without any tact.
When my friend saw I was angry he told me not to worry about it because the man was in his words, "most likely senile"....

This week, while my family was on vacation at hawaii (which has a lot of japanese people by the way), while me and my sister (both of us are half japanese) were at the beach, this woman comes up to us and just started talking.... her: Really nice weather here huh? us: yeah, sure.... it's pretty warm her: it's really nice here in general us: yeah her: but its too bad about all the *tries to do the racists eye slanting thing*.... us: honestly, why would anyone come up to people who they don't know at all to voice their racist outlook??

^Pure idiocy, if ever I've seen it.
edit: I think when you experience things like these, it's best to brush it off as stupidity exemplified by people who are misguided (because that's exactly what it is), rather than be offended.

^ im with you on that one and im a teenager. I know some people my age who have formed groups on myspace that are dedicated to the "f - off were full" type attitudes. I just ignore them and try not to get too pissed off about it Urgh-yeah-while being half asian makes me proud, on the other hand, it can be difficult. I remember being younger (like in gradeschool) and feeling like I needed to be more white, because 98% of the people where I live were white (and that's still how it is), and I felt like the odd one out because I thought I didn't belong anywhere. I used to get so upset at myself because I didn't look pure white. I have a very close half-asian friend, though, who can identify with me, so that was lucky.

ª I used to want to be more "white" too. That was in second grade.
I feel like a "racial spy" a lot. My friend (who's half asian) hates all asians. I also know someone who calls people Jews whenever they make dumb mistakes (and I'm about a quarter Jewish).

I've been in this situation before, but generally it doesn't happen a lot because most western people assume me to be 100% East Asian. I met this French woman one day. She offered to help me get used to the area and I accepted. On our first trip together, a group of Chinese people sat in front of us and began talking in Cantonese. She immediately pulled a disgusted face and went, 'Nyeah, nyeh, nyeh!' wagging her head from side to side. Then she looked at me with an expression as if to say Cantonese is the most ridiculous language in the world, laughed and asked, 'You speak Chinese?' I said, 'I'm half Chinese.' I thought that would be the last of it after she realised her mistake, but every time we passed non-European people speaking non-European languages, she would mock them. Only this time she would always claim, 'I'm not racist' at some point. I can't believe she has actually travelled to Asia when she clearly looks down on everyone who's not white. I don't talk to her any more.

^ The opposite happens to me. I visit Indonesia a lot (I'm half Indonesian), but I look more caucasian. So everyone there thinks I can't speak Indonesian, even my family. I heard some people say bad things about me right in front of me... I wonder what they'd say if I replied to them in Indonesian?
Also, whenever I go there, everyone thinks I'm a tourist, so I get higher prices on everything...

I sometimes talk to my family in Indonesian, but my accent is kind of weird and I can't roll the R's that are at the end of words.

Recently I was at the mall with my cousin here in the Philippines, and we often see white people coming there. The two of us sometimes joke about them not being able to notice that I'm half white/come from Europe. When getting a frappuccino and sitting down, this old, fat and bald british guy started to flirt with me. He apparently visits the Philippines often, and is looking for a Filipina wife.
I have met so many young Filipinas hooking up with old unattractive white men, I know the obvious reason why they choose to marry them. To me it felt so wrong that this old guy thought he had a shot with me just because he is from Europe - cos I'm from Europe myself and don't need him to take me there... ^^'

^ I know right! Toyomansi deserves much more than an old, fat, and bald white guy who marries Filipinas for those unethical reasons! >;[ Coming from an EA, I would be able to tell that you're EA..anywhere!
That reminds me of that annoying Japanese guy I met on the street. Don't know if I posted this before...I don't remember. Well to keep it short, he apparently goes to the same school as I do and he chased me all the way out of the school bus to BEG me to go out with him. Literally. I felt like I had to call the cops or the security because he wouldn't stop stalking me. Wait..now I think I remember I actually did post this already lol..but anyways, he said "I'll take you to Japan, I'll give you a nice car...I'll give you anything you want!" because I told him that I like Japanese stuff after he told me he was Japanese. I just thought...meh..I can go by myself...with my bf...not an annoying jerk like YOU! It's so funny when annoying, extremely persistent, and desperate guys think they have a shot with you.

Old fat European or old fat Japanese guy? Choice is never a bad thing. What would make it perfect... what is is missing is the old fat hafu guy. There must not be enough to go around.
