You have to assume that she's mixed, but...but maybe she's supposed to be white and we're not supposed to notice that she's errr....not. I remember posting about this when the movie first came out years ago. It really annoyed me at the time - how 'they' turned a so-called full-blood Chinese actress into an EA character. Not a big deal I guess (especially if were not supposed to notice her colour). Hey, maybe John Cleese was suppose to be Chinese. Sorry just being silly now.

Nancy Kwan was EA. She played the part of Suzie in "the World of Suzie Wong' amongst other things.
'Love is a Many Splendoured Thing' was made into a TV series as well.
One of my faves is a TV mini-series called 'The Far Pavilions' (1984). It's about colonialisation in late 1800s India/Afghanistan. It's beautiful story - made by the people who did Chariots of Fire I think. It was based on a book that was written during a time contemporary to the setting and has some incredible insights in to the politics of the region (Bush should have watched it before making any hasty decisions!). But politics aside, it addresses issues (that at the time were almost unmentionable) to do with identity, culture, loyalty and racial mixing. There is a minor character - a particularly spineless chap - who comes across as aloof and arrogant as he looks down upon the dirty uncouth natives. In the end in he takes his own life when he admits for the first time that he is 'half caste' (Anglo-Indian).
This part is played by a very young Rupert Everett.
And like "Love is a Many Splendoured Thing', if the issues don't get you excited, then the romance will. It's a cracking story by all accounts. Why isn't it more famous?!

I believe she did. Forgot about her. She's beautiful.
I'm drawing a blank on movies in general though.. I do know that most anime characters at least look EA. A lot of video game characters too.

Dirk Struan's illegitimate son was EA in 'Taipan' (based on James Clavell's novel). Dunno the actor's name, but he looked pretty Chinese. The character was a bit of a lost soul who wasn't trusted by anyone, except his father, due to his mixed heritage.

The part of Dirk Struan's illegitimate son is played by Russell Wong (Romeo Must Die, Joy Luck Club, Mummy 3). My EAdar is way out coz he is actually EA. "Taipan' was his first role.

Paddy: So would you be cooler if a Western woman had played the EA role rather than Lucy Liu? I'm not to happy about it either but then again many of us turn out Asian-looking ... Well, I think the point is that Charlie's Angels is just an action flick, so I don't see why they should try to confuse the audience by having an Asian looking character with a white looking parent. It's superfluous to the story. Having said, that, you could easily say what does it matter about the ethnicities of the character - you're only supposed to be watching the action unfold! The thing is, Lucy Liu isn't EA, so why make her character EA? I would have the same argument if they had decided that Cameron Diaz's character was the daughter of Mr. Miyagi. It's just superfluous and confusing, and therefore misleading.

Why can't she have a white Dad without it be confusing or misleading? Was kind of nice to see Hollywood shake things up a little... I was almost disappointed when I found out when Jennifer Connelly's character in The Day the World Stood Still wasn't the biological Mom of the little kid (Will Smith's son in real life).. oh well. Loved that movie btw, was balling most of the time though.

Yup, I can see your point. I felt kinda strongly about it at the time (4 years ago?), but it's hardly a big deal! And refreshing in a way, I suppose.
Yeah and in the Day the Earth Stood Still - they kept you guess for a while with the kid and his step-mother. Can't say I balled, but the bit where the kid takes Keanu to his dad's grave nearly had me reaching for my sleeve!
