It depends on whether a person wants a relationship or an extension of himself/herself.

Hmm, this guy again... I remember all of the coverage last year, when the Canadian press descended on this story. I know that he created a website and YouTube channel and has been promoting himself at a number of different events and conferences in Canada and the U.S. for some time already.
Not to take away anything from his accomplishments (it sounds like he is doing much of this on his own with occasional visits to Japan for research), but aren't there a number of research groups with fairly similar, if not more refined, technology out there? Most people are aware of all of the tech events in Japan surrounding humanoid robots, etc. What exactly separates his work from the rest of the pack (serious question)? Anyhow, the person who wrote that report seems to think that the whole lonely-guy-robot-sex angle is so bloody interesting. -roll It's a tabloid, after all...
Some observations: 1.) Canada and the U.S. are far behind Japan in the area of robotics (duh), which makes this a much more interesting story to Americans and Canadians. He grew up in Japan, FWIW. 2.) Long before relationships with robots threaten to take the place of real relationships, we will probably see them employed in things such as janitorial work, menial labor, and, yes, eventually sexworkers (not sure if that term is really appropriate but what the heck).

She's going to dump him for a white guy. Then Amy Tan will write a story about it and it will be made into a movie. This will greatly upset Zap Rowsdower.

lol@ swinger's comment SAM makes some good points. Mostly I just find AI research fascinating......and the fact that this 'bot shares a name with our very own Aiko kinda made it funny.
