My heart.
IT HAS BEEN BROKEN.
I work a 5-minute walk away from where he was found. Paparazzi GALORE, naturally. Glad I didn't have to run into that mess on my way home.

RIP.
I think it was a bit of a disgrace that the paparazzi were lined up to take photos of his body being taken out of the hotel, as though they were lined up at the premiere of an actual hollywood film. Damn vultures.
As a freaky coincidence, right before I went to bed last night, I was actually reading about Heath Ledger on Wikipedia, finding out that he was to star as the Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, 'Dark Knight', and also watched a short but intense scene with him and Billy Bob Thornton on Youtube from the film, 'Monster's Ball'. Then today I turn on the tv and this news pops up during the first ad break.
Something scares me about Hollywood. Many celebrities have what millions around the world dream of, yet they still suffer emotionally/psychologically, just like everyone else. I have no doubt that the vultures (paparazzi) are at least in part to blame for this. They are the first to attack celebrities lives with scandal that is often fake, and then are the first to praise them in death. Hypocrites. Anyway, I am ranting now.
Though I have not seen Brokeback Mountain, I have heard enough about the film to know that there is no doubt that Ledger's role in it will go down as a Hollywood classic. The film broke down modern-day boundaries in cinema and he was critically and commercially praised for his performance in such a defining role.
Once again, RIP.
edit: I should mention that I do not know if the death was caused by suicide or if it was an accident etc, but I do know that the paparazzi had a history of hounding Heath Ledger, hence me venting my anger at them in this post.

I can't believe he's dead. Youth, career, child, money, looks. He had what most of us want. No offense, Ethel, but most of what you list above (except for children -- well, to most people anyway) isn't really all that important, and this incident (assuming that it wasn't some dumb accident) just goes to show that. Overall emotional well-being, health, and an enlightened state of being (or peace with God/the universe/etc.) are the things that count in life. Without these, one really has nothing at all. While I agree with your priorities SAM, I feel confident that you place far too much faith in the priorities of "most people". Don't forget big houses and fancy cars though.

Actually, I meant to say that Ethel's list item "child" is something that most people want and that I feel is important. And yes, it's all IMHO, of course. I certainly wasn't speaking on behalf of the rest of mankind. (And I should stop writing parenthetically...)

Ah, I see what you did now, but I can still read it the other way; it was confusing.. but yeah, I agree with you. LaFace: You made a point about Hollywood scaring you and perhaps the papa's being to blame, but then you went on to say, "Many celebrities have what millions around the world dream of, yet they still suffer emotionally/psychologically, just like everyone else." I think your latter point is more interesting; to me it suggests that to understand it we need to look beyond Hollywood to society-at-large to understand why those who have what everyone dreams of can still be miserable.. Though it hasn't been officially ruled suicide at this point right?

I did rant about the paparazzi because it is something that is known to have bothered him a lot in the past, and they were right there upon his death like a pack of vultures.
