Just curious as to what the good folk of EAN do to earn some coin.
What is your current job?
What have you done in the past, and/or what would you like to do (or plan to do) in the future?
Or, if you are studying, what job do you plan on doing in the future with your eventual qualification?
Also interested to read what your job entails on a day-to-day basis, for those who might not know so much about it on first glance.
Over to you guys.

I have been (in order) a biology lab assistant dissecting fruit flies, a research assistant on various economics research projects, a research assistant for an epidemiologist who studies Multiple Sclerosis, a waiter at an Italian restaurant, a delivery boy and warehouse laborer, a teaching assistant, and back to being a research assistant for the last three years. Those are just the paying jobs. Right now 75% of my income comes from from fellowships and only 25% from "labor" income. Nothing that interesting really, although arguing about evolution with Jehovah's witnesses in El Salvador was a good way to learn Spanish and filling bottles with detergent and labeling them for hours on end is probably the most boring job I've had to do (even more boring than data entry since I couldn't listen to music).
Pretty soon I'll have a real job - sometime in the next two years depending on when I decide to graduate. I like doing research so I'll probably end up at a University or maybe working for a government agency (like the Federal Reserve or World Bank) or maybe a think tank. Basically that means my job is just a continuation of what I do know as a student, plus or minus some boring committee work and maybe teaching for 4-6 hours a week. Which means reading articles, sitting through seminars, sitting in front of a computer screen crunching numbers, or laying on my couch with a pen and paper trying to think deep thoughts about economics.

Anyway, what do you do LaFace? I have no idea what most people here do either (though there seem to be a lot of students, just based on the overall demographics here) and this thread does make me curious. I have to say my brother probably takes the cake for the most crap jobs ever - donut store (Tim Horton's), Subway, dishwasher, night security watchman, tree planter, flyer delivery, telemarketer, landscaping, etc. Just a who's who of the crappiest joe jobs around.

I'm in relocation industry.. so basically customer services/HR. I deal with mostly US/global companies who send their staff over to Asia. Sort out their visa/immigration and orientation into the new country. I deal majority with a lot of US->China moves. But also to Philippines, India (stress!), Korea etc. Most of the assignees are pretty nice but have to deal with some brats. I've also been semi-promoted so I now also have VIP clients, but mostly deal through their assistants so its not too bad.
I previously worked for 2.5years for a Big 4 Accounting firm as a tax accountant fresh out of Uni. which was a bit of a joke, since i have no accounting/finance background and was working with numbers daily, nor was I interested in getting the CPA... But I have a 'good firm' on my CV, so I guess it was worth it.
Whilst at Uni, I taught English over the summer in China, and also did voice recording work for English text books in China - the listening segments. That was quite good fun and paid well.
Also had usual part time work - waitressing / lockerroom attendant whilst at school.

I'm a tech at a music rehearsal studio. It's not as glamorous as it sounds, but my schedule is insanely flexible and as a musician, it has its perks.

Honestly though, this sounds like me. I don't even care to talk about jobs here because most people seem like well-to-do achievers, or well educated. It's embarrassing. Why even worry about it? Someone (like me) is always grousing about what other people are doing or having. I'll always be thinking I should or could have achieved more. For me, finding out what makes me happy is the hardest thing ever. If you have that, then you are golden, no matter whatever else. ------------------------ But in keeping with the spirit of the thread, I am an audio technician and systems admin for an audio post production studio. Previously, I was an audio engineer at USC -- technical engineer, not a studio engineer. And also worked at the library, cataloging new acquisitions. Before then, I had a short stint with Sacramento County voter registration doing data entry (voter reg cards). And before that, I worked for Pacific Bell as a customer service rep (you dial 611 and you got me and bitched at me). Had other odd jobs as a telemarketer (ugh), data entry for a telemarketer (less ugh, but still ugh), and a janitor (right around high school).

I bet I could own your brother in the "crappy" job department. Here's my resume: - Warehouse monkey - Demolition man - Marina gas jockey - Farm labourer (supervising migrant workers and u-pick) - McDonalds (became a manager there) - Produce store clerk - Bike safety instructor - Waterski instructor - Wedding emcee (not really a job i guess) - Piano and music theory teacher - Countless newspaper routes. The worst was having to collect $1 from each subscriber every month. - University lecturer - Lifeguard - Carnival games attendant - Chicken for hire (as in wearing a Chicken costume on busy street corners) - Comic book vendor - Babysitter - Youth group leader Very recently (as in within the past 12 months), I've worked as a postman for Canada Post and a security guard for a local shopping mall. I've registered again for postal service this summer (you meet great people!) and got a gig working for a frozen yogurt chain. I'm also going to do some "consulting" work for McDonalds as my friend manages a bunch of outlets. If I were living in some African republic, I bet i could have like 8 wives now.

Really, I'm not as worried about the outside world as it might sound. If I was like that, then I'd truly be a mess. But I...hey, wait...aw...

As for me, I've never had a job. I "babysat" my neighbours once when I was, like, 10. Put me off work.

Rob, half of those jobs seem entirely cool. Demolitian Man? Wedding emcee? Working in comic shop? Waterski instructor?
However, so far "Chicken for Hire" is probably the most degrading job I've seen posted here - probably not the crappiest, but certainly the most degrading. What were you doing, handing out flyers for a fried chicken restaurant?
All that said, being a mascot for a sports team might actually be fun.

(edit: just interested - had some NY and Tokyo friends in that line of work)
A lot of people seemed to get into Risk Arbitration after the easy money had already been made. They thought it would be low-hanging fruit...most of them missed the boat. I have two friends that did convertibles arbitrage: one did well, the other went into the meat grinder. It may have been a matter of timing.
I've had a few jobs myself...let me try and remember.
Paperboy Reader (read books to blind students - got paid by the government) Deli / Grocery worker Shoe Salesman Night Systems Operator (computer) University T/A Federal Government work Computer and computer parts sales Computer Network "engineer" (Certified, but just a title, not a degree) Guitar amplifier manufacturer (sales / design) Internet application developer Electronics parts sales (current)

currently i'm a schoolmarm.would love to do something along these lines for the rest of my life. past jobs have been: -program manager (i.e. den mother/caregiver) for a home for developmentally delayed adults -maid -cleaner for rentals after tennants have vacated.lemme just say, people can be effing nasty. -esthetician/makeup artist.waste of schooling/money there,it didn't last long.realized that though i'm obsessed with skincare and makeup,it's not a whole lot of fun to do it for random people all day long. -processed orders for AT&T and affiliates-dishnetwork,yahoo,cingular. -caretaker for someone's ranch.that was a cool one.fed and tended to animals, kept the property up,tended to the garden.it was a pretty small thing, the woman had gotten too old to do the work and she'd never married.miss the ATV and playing with the animals.do not miss trying to herd goats into a pen for the night. -worked retail @ target. -worked in a natural foods store.that was a fun one too. -a bunch of temp office work (hated it) -ice cream shop.(hated it.) -bagel shop.(hated the carb-a-licious temptation combined with free food during the shift.i could live on asiago bagels.) i'm kind of a Jill-of-all-trades. Really, I'm not as worried about the outside world as it might sound. If I was like that, then I'd truly be a mess. But I...hey, wait...aw... don't worry,Groinkers,i'm solidly in the 'mess' department-at least you're a step ahead of somebody.
