This only happened to me once, but in 8th grade, the kid sitting next to me in web design class asked if I was adopted, because I wrote in my web profile that my mom was chinese and my dad was white. Er...I guess some people can't comprehend what happens when a white person and an asian person have sex, lol-or that it's even possible.

Haha, yeah-I remember so often in middle/elementary school getting the "what are you?" question. I think a lot of people were confused when I told them my Chinese middle name followed by my French last name, lol.

When i was a child i and another biracial friend get often asked if we were brothers. My brothers told me that there were some Italian kids who were a bit elder than my brothers - they forced my brothers to say "Italy is GOOD - Japan is $hit", otherweise they wanted to give my brothers a punch in the face. I live in italy and i see italians doing it always. My half friend and I used to always get confused for siblings (I'm not sure if we still do), as well. We don't look at all alike when you see us from the front, but we look similar from the back (we even had our hair in the same hairstyle with similar clothing, lol), so I understand how people could have confused us for sisters.

... Most of my race-related irritations aren't so much what people say, more so what they do or what they imply. Like when people confuse me for another Asian/Eurasian person in the room, even though we look nothing alike. It just makes it obvious that they're too busy noticing that I look different from them to actually listen or care about what you have to say. You have to watch out for those folks. They're usually the subconscious racists. I agree, and this is probably my point of contempt with the scenario I described on the previous page. And because it's often implied, someone who's never been on the receiving end of this [more subtle form of] racism wouldn't get it... Even after I'd continued trying to explain it all, they're still clueless/don't care. If anything, their typical response is "why are you ashamed of your home country?" despite the fact that they already knew I've never step foot in any of the countries of my ethnic origins I've come across such ignorant people too and it frustrates me far more than the very obvious racism because a) you can't always be sure if it's intentional or not, so you're unsure as to whether or not you should say something and b) if you do say something, those who've never experienced subtle racism will all respond as if you're over-reacting to nothing. Then, as Teehee has pointed out, if you follow option b) you must explain yourself, which also gets you nowhere! Looks like there's no option other than to silently fume about it... What also bothers me is the 'you all look the same' belief. I'm not referring to those who get the East Asian races confused (i.e. can't tell the difference between Korean and Japanese), but those that believe all East Asian people are identical to each other. I've had plenty of times that, because I was half East Asian, people would get me confused with other half East Asians or even 100% East Asians when we looked nothing alike. Or, again, asking if we're sisters/brothers. If the East Asian person was a man and they already knew we weren't siblings, the inevitable suggestion would be, 'Oh, you should date!'... because we look similar. Don't get me started on comparisons to Lucy Liu... Everyone in school always said I looked identical to her even though I have an oval face, pointier nose, brown hair, bigger hazel eyes, no freckles... you get the idea. The instant I mentioned I was half Chinese, 'Yeah, you look like Lucy Liu!' Both my Chinese father and my brother got compared to Bruce Lee, so I guess the entire Chinese population consists of Lucy Liu and Bruce Lee clones in their minds. Then, of course, the next question was always, 'Do you know karate?' even though that isn't Chinese... Either that or something about eating people's pets. Then there are those idiots that insist I am 100% East Asian or 100% white because I don't fit their narrow-minded, stereotypical mould of what X race is supposed to look like. Some people found it incredibly difficult to accept that my husband and I were a couple. We would hear people on the bus speculating as to what our relationship could possibly be. Is he her dad? He doesn't look much older. He can't be her brother because he doesn't look like her. Maybe he's her step brother and she's adopted? What if he's her uncle? Then when we got off the bus I made sure to give him a big snog (US: make out) in full view, with the passengers looking on in shock and awe: IT CAN'T BE! Another thing that I absolutely hate is the assumption that any East Asian that has double eyelids has definitely, without-a-doubt had surgery and they are (of course) doing it to look white. Either these people are ignorant and haven't encountered enough or paid enough attention to East Asians (plenty are naturally born with large eyes and double eyelids, like my 100% Chinese uncle), or they're subconsciously white supremacists who are arrogant enough to think anything non-whites do to beautify themselves is in order to look white. First of all, why the double eyelids of white people? East Asian people can have double eyelids. South Asian people have double eyelids. Black people have double eyelids. (It's the same with high nose bridges.) But no, white's the best, so obviously that's what they're going for. That's why they still look distinctively East Asian after having all that expensive surgery. If they really wanted to look white, don't you think they would be convincing enough that you can't even tell that they are an East Asian 'trying to look white'? Secondly, what's with the double standard? No non-white person can do anything (eyelid surgery, nose job, skin whitening, hair dying, boob jobs, hair removal) or happen to look like they've done something without being accused of 'trying to look white' and yet white people can get all sorts of things done and no one accuses them of trying to look like another race. Why don't white women who get boob jobs, pump up their lips with botox and tan all the time get accused of trying to look like a stereotypical black person? Why don't white women who get breast reductions, liposuction and laser hair removal get accused of trying to look like a stereotypical East Asian person?

^ I know..it's weird right? No one says anything when a white person dyes their hair black. No one accuses them of trying to "look asian." Well, the only one is Magibon (Youtube Japanfreak star)..which a lot of people think she IS indeed trying to look more asian when she is 100% white. Well, I think that the thing that distinguishes natural asian double eyelids and caucasian double eyelids (occidental) is the thickness, the shape, and the depth. ALOT of 100% Asian people have some form of double eyelids, but they are usually very different from the Caucasian eye, if you know what I mean. The starting-ending point, how deep-set it is, and how thick it is, is very different. However, that is not to say that 100% asian people cannot be born with "Caucasian-looking" eyes though. But in MOST cases, they aren't. But it is definitely wrong to think "HEY THAT PERSON DEFINITELY HAD SURGERY!" if you see them with double eyelids. I mean wtf, grow up and stop assuming.

^ I know what you mean, but a lot of non East Asian people don't see the difference between a Caucasian double eyelid and an East Asian one. A great example would be my mother-in-law. I have no brow ridge whatsoever, extra fat in my eyelid so my eyes are nowhere near deep set, the eyelid crease is close to the eye itself and almost meets the inner corner... yet because I have double eyelids she insists my eyes look white and that I don't look East Asian at all. She also said the same about the uncle I mentioned, that it is 'very unusual that he has such big eyes with eyelids'. I swear, some people believe we really should look like stereotypical cartoons with only slits for eyes...
Whenever people who can't tell the difference see an Asian with double eyelids they point the he/she-is-trying-to-look-white-with-surgery finger. Even when someone who has had eyelid surgery keeps their eye East Asian like (by shape, eye socket depth, angle of the eye, having the eye crease meet the inner corner, size of eyelid, etc.) they are still accused of trying to look white. It's not as if the person had liposuction on their eyelids to give it depth and then had brow implants to give them a brow ridge. I find that behaviour incredibly ignorant.

But 99% of anime has huge eyes hehe. I've been told by a few people that I look like an anime character. Meh, that's probably cause of my eyes and small lips (like it is small across my face). I think my eyes are my most "white-looking" facial feature...my crease is parallel to my eye..it doesn't meet at the inner corner and it is thick..although it still lacks the real depth of a "true" caucasian eye. It is pretty much the typical "leaning-towards-caucasian-but still a little asian-Eurasian eye" I would think haha.
Speaking of eyes, I remember when I was little..my sis and I would make fun of our mom and say she has "triangle eyes." Her eyes are double-eyelids, just that the shape is kinda droopy and forms a triangle! Lol....I guess that we even thought that is usual for an asian lady. But we were kids and whenever she is mean to us we would talk about how triangular her eyes are. Weird kids we were..
Liposuction on the eye sounds painful.

For most of my life, I've been aware of my mixed race, but there are times where I look at myself in the mirror and really don't see any Eurasian-ness incorporated in to me-does this happen to anyone else? Ideally, I'd like to look half-and-half, like a majority of the members on this forum do.

There's this annoying, slightly nerdy girl at work who no one really likes but we're all nice to her anyway. She says the dumbest comments and we always just smile and nod our heads. Here's what the retard said the other day: "Yeah, people who are half Asian and half white are always either really, really ridiculously beautiful or really, really effing ugly. Never in between." Hmmm...I don't think she knows I'm Eurasian but I'm pretty sure she doesn't think I'm "really, really ridiculously beautiful." Should I embarrass her by informing her that I'm EA?

"Yeah, people who are half Asian and half white are always either really, really ridiculously beautiful or really, really effing ugly. Never in between." I don't know where you work, but it's rare for non-EA's to just start talking about EA's out of the blue. Anyway, that quote has been applied to almost every ethnic group--especially about the women by men with very particular tastes. However, most of the guys I talk to recognize this kind of dimorphism most in Russian women.

She walked into work one day wearing a kimono and some ancient style samurai hat or whatever she said it was, and not as a joke or for any special purpose. I'm telling you, this chick's a dork for real. But anyway, I guess people like that are the ones who would pay attention to anything Eurasian. I hope she doesn't find out I'm Eurasian. Partly because I don't wanna help confirm her list of really, really effing ugly EAs and partly cuz I'm afraid she'll be obsessed with me if I tell her.

I'm telling you, this chick's a dork for real. The label you're looking for is otaku. Anywho, she sounds like an interesting character. So you say her personality is the only thing ruining it? Speaking of personality ruining things... You need to cut that out. Always with them negative waves. You're going to need a good personality to compensate for your looks. I kid, I remember the first avatar pic you posted of yourself--the one you took down real quick ;D. I didn't see anything ugly. I thought you we kinda pretty. Your personality ain't too bad either--though a little stubborn. Anywho, hype is already laying up on the therapy couch with a broken heart. We don't need you going down from self-inflicted wounds.

I normally tell people half truths about my identity..
I got from someone: You don't speak Chinese, do you?
Are you adopted? (Heaps when I was little)
Ching Chong (in primary school)
Also: Them: You're Japanese ! Me: No, I am half Chinese Them: It's the same thing..
