My mum used to make pineapple tarts and sugee cake while I was growing up. Pineapple tarts were my fav....I'd lick all the pineapple jam and just leave the pastry. Anyway, I'm actually making sugee cake in January for a dinner party I'm having so it's a real coincidence that you posted the picture of it seeing that not many people know what it is. Holy smokes (!!). For real?? I've never in my life found another person besides my ea childhood frd (still living in sg) who continues to make sugee cake and the pineapple jam tarts. I've only heard through old ladies that there were others who continued to bake them, but not actually met others. I wonder how much our recipes vary, if they do. We have given out the recipe within our family but as soon as they realize how much work it is, the paper collects dust..

Hey, Alexsmom, how about Halo-Halo? For me this is the ultimate philipine treat! You got your sweet beans and various fruits, layered with crushed ice and topped with ice cream! Sorry no pic~I'll search for one another time.

Halo-Halo = ice kachang + ice cream? Ice kachang + ice cream: Halo-Halo: What ingredients are in halo-halo? Is the white stuff dairy or coconut milk or something else? Ice kachang has red bean, grass jelly, palm seed ("atapchee"), some green colored string jelly, sweet coloring for the ice, gula melaka (liquid brown sugar), condensed milk, and the optional scoop of ice cream (may have left one or two other ingredients). Ah ok. Cut and paste from the Web: "Halo-halo (from "halo" = mix) is a favorite Filipino dessert or snack. It is basically a mixture of sweet preserved beans(red beans, chick peas), coconut meat (macapuno), jackfruit (langka), pounded dried rice (pinipig), sweet yam (ube), cream flan (leche flan), shreds of sweetened plantain (saba), filled with crushed ice, milk (or coconut milk) and topped with ice cream. The halo-halo basically is sweet, creamy, and a filling dessert. Hmm...sounds quite fruity and a little more complex than ice kachang. Must try one day. Curiously, there is a Vietnamese desert that is very similar to ice kachang and chendol. It has lots of beans with ice on top, and condensed + coconut milk but no gula melaka. I don't know what it's called but have tried it in Viet restaurants where i am. Sigh, so many desserts. Looks like we have a kaya and pineapple tart monarchy here ;D

Thats a funny looking ice kachang.. Usually its huge heap of shaved ice covered in multicoloured sweet syrup and the 'bits' are hidden underneath the ice. And double dashings of cocunut cream .

Yes, it is an atypical ice kachang. I thought I'd show one with the ingredients outside for illustration. Here's a more normal/standard looking one:

I love the beans and random floating things underneath. Halo halo sounds like there's more ingredients. I don't see many Filipino restaurants around here.. actually, I've never seen one. Is it just me or are they quite rare? I'd love to try some of the things mentioned here. Yea, we have a tart monarchy. Hogan has his coat of arms and everything too.
