I think there aren't many Filipino restaurants because it is just not practical. It takes a long time to cook Filipino food and usually the food is cooked in large amounts. Since it is hot in the Philippines the food has to be able to keep without refrigerating. The filipino food my grandma cooks just sits on the stove for a week. Also Filipinos don't tend to live in groups. We dont have our version of China town or Little Italy. However there are a bunch of places in New Jersey and in California that have a large concentration of Filipinos. There are also catering services that make food for big parties. If you really want to try the food, find a Filipino friend. They will be happy to give you food! ^_^

In the Chicago area, where I used to live, there is quite a large population of Filipinos. There are quite a few Filipino grocery stores and some of them have a type of "deli" where you can get some food to go - I think typical fare at these places is adobo, sinigang, and probably some seafood dishes. Where I live now there are very, very few Filipinos! No Filipino grocery stores, restaurants, anything! For the asian population here, there are mostly Hmong, Vietnamese, and Chinese I think. Hey Cel, you might want to see if your local Asian grocery store sells some filipino foods. You can buy a jar of the Halo-Halo ingredients, and just layer with crushed ice and ice cream on top. Hi Bulaklak~from one half filipina to another!

I love the filipino dessert - Brazo des Mercedes - it's this merengue roll around a custurd filling and it can be made in a taro flavour as well...that's my favourite dessert of all. ;D
Or buko salad - young coconut and fruit salad only the way filipinso can make it ;D
Oh or halo-halo - mix mix - with crused ice, tapioca, jack fruit, etc.... ;D

Oh wow. I think I'll do that - buying the ingredients. I used to have a Filipina friend but we drifted after awhile. Maybe I can call her up... for some food? jk Thanks for the advice, bulaklak and LS. Heh, I'm going to have fun crushing my own ice. Maybe I'll get one of those fancy ice shaving things too where you put the bowl underneath and it snows magically. Not likely. Ok, where's my mace..
RollingBlathery, if you're in Vancouver, you should check out the restaurant "Ellie" in Richmond for Sg/Malaysian food if you have time. It's on Cambie and Brown st. There's a fairly large complex. Look for the green sign. They pack killer ice kachangs in these massive shell-bowl looking things, and their food's better than the larger chains. Decent prices also.
I should get commission for this.

^ Ooooo....thanks for the tip. Will definitely check it out next time I'm up there (upcoming summer hopefully). I've been to an SG/MY restaurant off Hastings (near Burnaby I think). But that was years back.
I'll mention you sent me to Ellie's when I'm there. I'll try and sweet talk them into giving you a freebie ice kachang. ;D
*off to practise my sweet talking*
mmmmm....gin doi.....durian. Mmmmmm....durian gin doi!

Blathery, I only know a Viet/pho, Greek, Italian and Indian on the Hastings near Burnaby.. A Tropika might have been there before.. but I don't recall and it was probably before I lived around here. Or perhaps I haven't been keeping my eyes peeled for one. Thanks for the ice kachang thought. Don't bother sweet talking to the waitresses for too long - chat up the owners. Gin doi.. it sounds like chin toi? The latter a derivation of cheng teng? Why are the wacky sgeans I know calling cheng teng, chin toi? Thanks for the advice, Crows. Most filipinos are honestly the most openly warm bunch of people I've ever met; I don't doubt their hospitality.

I was brought there by a couple of ancient aunts who have been ensconced in Vancouver forever. That restaurant may have been an old one that has closed since. Are Ellie's owners Singaporeans? I'll have to brush up my politically incorrect singlish if they are. I second the kudos on Filipinos. Every Filipino I've met have been extremely warm and sociable without airs.

The owners are Malaysian! They'll probably recognize your accent a mile away. The aunts are.. banished? Or they like Vancouver that much? Anyway, I asked around about the gin doi/chin toi/cheng teng dessert. It's definately cheng teng. I have no idea what they were talking about.

Ok, where's my mace.. filipinos likes to feed anybody even people they dont know. have you heard of fiesta when they celebrate their patron saint in the PI? chunkmuffin will know this...people you don't know will usually invite you to eat in their house. anyways, my favorites are leche plan and halo halo. wow, is it me or is there a sudden explossion of half-filo lately.. ;D yay fiesta ;D.. its really fun, you go house to house and eat and eat and eat ;D we also used to make food at home during fiesta but wouldn't invite any strangers though... just friends and party all day and night and in between go to neighbors (which are also friends of ours) and continue to eat and eat..hahaha!! It was fun.. kinda' miss it. Haven't been in a fiesta for 3 1/2 years now anyway to get back to the topic, here are my fave asian (pinoy!) desserts: putoseko buko salad suman (I only like cassava though) leche flan bibingka yema balls gee.. I could go on and on..
