Interesting. My mother, who is completely Chinese, has been mistaken several times for being Filipino. I, on the other hand, have only once been mistaken for 1/2 Filipino (and at least I give them good credit for coming close, since they guessed correctly that I was EA), but more often than not I tend to get mistaken for South American or Latino. Here in Australia though, since there aren't many Latinos around, they usually think I'm Italian, (known as "Wog") or some other kind of Mediterranean or even Arab. But there is such a long list of all the ethnicities I've been mistaken for, I could go on forever.

I've lived in Spain and traveled a lot in Puerto Rico and Mexico, but the locals always can spot my Asian side. I speak Spanish. Only in the US do I get mistaken for Latina.

I got asked if I was Pueto Rican the other day.. by a drunk old English dude trying to hit on me whilst I was sat next to my bf at the bar (prob thought we were bro/sis or just too drunk to know/care) And then proceeded to dig a deeper hole by saying it was because of my big brown eyes, high eyebrows, tan .. i didnt bother hearing the rest.

For a couple of days last week, I didn't have access to my parents' car, so I had to take the cab several times while I was in Makati. What was really funny was when the cabbies (BTW, I love Manila, but Manila cabbies are the worst -- most are honest but don't know the city very well) would try to guess my nationality and/or ethnicity. Most thought I was British(?)... For some reason, I think that there are more British in the Phils these days (I ran into loads of them near my parents' place on Bora too). Not too long ago, the standard guess was "German." Older folks usually go with "American" (often punctuated by, "Hi, Joe!") or Spanish. I was surprised when one of the cabbies guessed right away that I was Filipino. Turns out he was from Negros (I'm part-Negrense). Go figure...
In the U.S., I've only been mistaken for Latino in some of the small, neighborhood Cuban, Argentine, and Spanish restaurants that I've been to. Rarely have I been misidentified as Latino by Mexicans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, or Puerto Ricans (the other, more common Hispanic groups in the U.S.).

My friend who is half asian half bulgarian says she gets mistaken for a latina a lot when she gets tan in the summer...
only once in my life has someone guessed "Mexican"..considering how f'ing light-skinned I am..I was really confused.....and the person that asked me was Filipino and about 10 shades darker than me...so I dunno people are strange...I sort of get offended if they guess wrong.

I'm sorry to tell you that the Teveses are not solely from Negros but other Western Visayas provinces such as Ilo-Ilo, Aklan, and as far as Dumaguete. Many of them and relatives moved to Manila. My father is actually related to the Teveses and the Piccios. But the Piccio is not of Spanish but Italian origin that inter-married with the Spaniards.

Sometimes you give me the creeps. The two Teveses girls there look like some family members and relatives on the father side.

*Must stop posting on a forum while in the office*. But Manilena is a red herring posting some of my father's relatives. Must ignore Manilena from now on.

Sorry, you're so wrong. My father left the "feudal clan" from Ilo-Ilo, sold his share of land to my aunt, left for Manila, married a my mom - who is predominantly Filipina, & found work in a University. I'm glad he chose that path of not enslaving any farmers. Most of my dad peers who worked in the Uni who came from Western Visayas did the same thing. Funny how they met and became neighbors. I'm proud that my immediate family did not oppress any Pinoys. Even my land-owner older relatives chose to work with their farmers and did not act like a lazy don.

In a picture from my college graduation, I'm standing with two Mexican girls. Several people have thought that they were my sisters. ? Maybe they thought I was adopted by a Mexican family.
