I always wondered... What is "Latino" anyway? I'm latino! Or at least I fit in some definitions of "latino".

Answering the OP: It used to be that, at most, people would guess that I was part latina. The light eyes and pale skin make me look pretty much full white (IMO).
Lately, I have had this happen. My current SO is latino from Mexico, born there and lived there for years, and speaks only lite English. In being with him, I've been picking up the language and (unconsiously) his accent. I've had a few times where I'll be in the supermarket or something and someone begins speaking to me in Spanish.

Sorry, you're so wrong. My father left the "feudal clan" from Ilo-Ilo, sold his share of land to my aunt, left for Manila, married a my mom - who is predominantly Filipina, & found work in a University. I'm glad he chose that path of not enslaving any farmers. Most of my dad peers who worked in the Uni who came from Western Visayas did the same thing. Funny how they met and became neighbors. I'm proud that my immediate family did not oppress any Pinoys. Even my land-owner older relatives chose to work with their farmers and did not act like a lazy don. wow, lots of people are illongo here? im from iloilo, im now staying in bacolod, negros haha.

All the time, some of my closest homies growing up where Chicano, and they thought I was a Chicano when they first met me. Basically everybody that meets me for the first time thinks I'm either straight up Chicano, or half white and Mexican.
It doesn't help that I got a shaved head, and wear dickies on the daily.

Hope this clears things out for you. I actually just registered for this. I am from Negros Oriental too and couldn't help see some mistakes here. First off, the 2 Teves girls (of Miss Teen Philippines Neg. Or. 2008) are not even related to each other as they come from 2 different lines of Teves's here in Negros Oriental. One Teves line are indeed from a Spanish stock who came directly from Spain and settled here. They are originally the hacienderos of Central Azucarera de Bais. This Teves line came with others like the Diaz, Villegas, Vicente, La Mata, Diago, Barrica, Villanueva, Montenegro and etc. Now Aleney Teves's dad is not from this line. But he is from the Meniong Teves line, not Spanish. But an influential family here in Negros who's roots are like all other Filipinos who have Spanish surnames. Rajo Laurel is also Meniong's grandson and Aleney's uncle. If you see the picture of Aleney's dad, he is not mestizo at all. Gary Teves is Meniong's son, brother of Aleney's grandfather. Aleney's mestiza looks come from her mother who's father is Amigo (spanish roots in Dumaguete) and Pflieder (with european roots from Bacolod). You know the sisters Faith Amigo and Ana Amigo Antonio (Chocolate Clothing Co. and Mrs. Will Antonio) - they are Aleney's aunts, 1st cousins of her mom. Okay, now Elise on the other hand, is directly from the Spanish line who settled in Negros because of the sugar and sugar central there. Her mom and dad are really both Spanish mestizos and mestizas. And to this day lives here in Negros with her family... Now Diana Barrica, is also from Negros Oriental. Her mother is from the Spanish Vicente family. Her father is also of the Spanish Barrica family, owners of the Santa Monica beach resort in Dumaguete. In fact she grew up in that very resort. Her family are also related to the Teves's, Diagos, Villegas's due to intermarriages. There are indeed a lot of Spanish mestizos and mestizas in Negros Oriental and Occ. This is due to the Negros history of being the sugar bowl of the Philippines. It was the Spanish hacienderos who own most of the sugar lands there. Some of their families have relocated all over the Phils. especially in Manila. But most are still living in Negros. Even if you ask any of the Spanish mestizos there in Manila, they mostly have roots coming from Negros. Even Bea Lucero, the famous child gymnast before have roots to the Villegas's and Bocanegra's of Negros Oriental. The Spanish there in Manila not from Negros are the Zobels, Elizaldes, Sorianos, etc. but some have also married into the Negros bunch.... Forgive me for the length of this message. But hope this clears some of the things up here.....

Oh yeah, I forgot the Ortiz, Villanueva, Ugarte families too. This is from seeing that wonderful magazine posted by Manilena. Thanks for sharing, very good read indeed. Yeah, Alex or Alexandra Teves is also the sister of the Miss Teen International Negros 1st runner-up I mentioned above Elise Ugarte Teves.... Maria Antonia or Marian Escano - Villegas, the Escano is Escano's of Cebu (her father's side). But Marian's mother is a Teves of Neg. Or. and her husband is also Villegas of Neg. Or. Daughter is Marie and Son is Jerome....

Yup, and Virginia Teves Laurel is from the Meniong Teves line. Her brother is Gary Teves and son is Rajo Laurel. Laurel is not Negrense but from the illustrious Laurel clan in Batangas....

Hi Manilena! Thanks for the articles you've posted too. I'm located in the U.S. now and I do miss my hometown, Dumaguete. I enjoyed the articles you've posted here. My Dad actually grew up with some of these people too. My grandfather was also connected to the Central Azucarera de Bais before. They lived in the sugar central compound there, hence my Dad and sibling's playmates and partymates where some of them. Not sure about the Barrica side. But I personally know that Diana Barrica is from the Barrica clan who owns Santa Monica Beach resort in Dumaguete. Diana's mother is a Vicente and who's brother used to be my cousin's good friend. That's why I used to see her as a kid playing in Sta. Monica. Sorry I had to delete the friendster link here. My father doesn't like that I'm posting it here. Because you know, he said these are good people and only want privacy. Best wishes and prayers to Diana's mother Dolores too. She has cancer and is having treatments. Diana's really a beautiful person inside and out and her mom is so lucky that she's there for her.

When I started college this year, many of the hispanic people mistook me for being hispanic. Some even tried to persuade me to join the Society of Hispanic Engineers. The illusion is usually shattered when they find out my name is Iman though.
