I live in a Mexican neighborhood and I was waiting for the bus one day. Some guys pull up in a van and ask me if I'm looking for work.
Yes, it really happened.

I get mistaken for Mexican a lot depending on where I am in the US. It's strange how some people are dead set on me being Latina whereas some people know I'm Asian. They never say half Asian though, they always think I'm full. I personally think I look more Latina.
When I was in Moscow last semester, the Russians all thought I was Uzbek or Kazakh. Occasionally, people thought I was from the Caucasus or Turkey.

Since I've never lived in the US I've never been mistaken for a Latina. Though once in the UK a kid asked me if I was Mexican after getting a 'no' when having asked if I was Italian (she was British).

nealtse: those illegals were not physionomist at all, judging from your pic you distinctively look EA. I was mistaken for Latino a few times. I do speak Spanish so I sometimes play games replying I'm from Argentina and they often buy it until they notice I have a Castillan accent from Spain. After unmasking my scheme one guy thinking I was Spaniard once called me a gringo. ;D

Do any of you speak Spanish? If so, do you ever play along with the whole Latino mistaken identity thing?

I do. I used to enjoy being ethnically ambiguous in Latin countries - after speaking a bit they almost always knew I wasn't a native speaker but they could never guess where I was from. This happened mostly in Cuba where people always hassle you in the street and play the "where are you from" game to initiate conversation. The best compliment I ever got on my Spanish was taking a bus into Paraguay from Brazil, I chatted with the guy sitting next to me and he assumed I was Brazilian. Better to have a Portuguese-Brazilian accent than a Gringo one I guess.
But that's in Spanish speaking countries, where I could pass for native until I opened my mouth but I wasn't fooling anyone. I've never really been mistaken for Latino or tried to play along in California. I suppose some people might think that but no one has ever approached me speaking Spanish or anything, even in mostly Latin areas like the Mission area of San Francisco.

Yep. Personally I think I look what I am (half chinese/white) but I have been mistaken for latino...by latinos. E.g. in Zara on Oxford High Street by the Argentianian staff. Often I get latinos looking at me strangely and wondering if I'm one "of them".
I reckon it's my skin tone and cheekbones- even when pale it's an olive (golden is what other people call I, I call it sallow!!!) kind of colour so in comparison to most brits, I've got a "tan" even in winter. It's from my mum who's a dark Chinese lady.
But personally I think I just look half Chinese.

Oh I never get spoken to in English when I go to the mall, pick up dry cleaning or get asked questions by strangers. I usually respond in Spanish but I'm a bit slow with Spanish numbers so I give them the time in English. I've actually gotten some rude remarks from Latinos when I tell them I don't speak Spanish... then I have to explain that I'm Filipino but not really Filipino, just half, and it becomes a mess. haha...
Other times, its not such a great experience. In highschool, one of my teachers kept calling me Maria and at my part time job, my boss did too (that's not my name. that's not my name!) Drunk frat boys in college never failed to greet me with hola and como estas? but the way they said it just made me feel dirty...

I bet David Bleo gets that all the time Hahaha... almost! When I'm in Texas, most people recognize me as Mexican... but I never know in what language should I start a convesation... you can meet some Juan Pérez and start talking in Spanish only to find out that he doesn't speak Spanish or is too shy to speak it with a Mexican... I don't wanna be offensive, but their Spanish isn't good, nor their English! =( When I was in Germany... only a few people knew at first sight I came from Latin America, some girl thougth I was fom Greece and others that I was Turkish... and at the school there it was funny to hear two girls from Ecuador talking about me in Spanish thinking I didn't understand what they were saying! And some people from the States told me once that my accent (in English) sounds "European"... whatever that means!

Oooooo....I got here a bit late.
Yes, mistaken for Latino. Anglo-flip, with kastila on my fathers side and relations to old spanish families in the philippines.
Story of my life. English just get so jealous. I'm too exotic for them; these f'ckin hillbillies. Ohhh...and don't mention the women here....f'ckin voyeurs and crushes; and more. I'm sorry but its the truth.

Never. Space alien, yes. Latino, no. I once wished for a golden tan, but fate did not intend for me to be golden.

O hello again. I know how it embarrassing it must be for you. But that was awhile Back LOL I sometimes used to be mistaken for a latino. Some are like fire others like water. I guess opposites for you attract. Your bizness at the end of the day. I mean...we all ridicule each other... I was never a good dancer...I can't dance the tango, which is quite popular now...but i can do chi sau and a little chi gerk. The closest dancing I ever did: So Quien es usted? Space aliens...someone should start a completely new thread on that.
